The Fires Creek Rim Trail

Summer is a truly wonderful time in the Great Smoky Mountains and at the Valley River RV Resort where you can explore and see nature in all its splendor. That said, it may not seem like it, but summer is starting to wind down.

Kids are going back into school soon if they’re not already back. The leaves will be starting to turn colors in not much more than a month’s time. While the autumn is a wonderful time as well, you should take advantage of the continuing wonderful weather to get out and explore the area.

Fires Creek

The Fires Creek Reactional Area is a part of the Nantahala National Forest that we discussed in more depth last month. This trail offers many of the great features you can find throughout the forest including hiking trails, waterfalls, picnic area and fishing.

You will also find that Fires Creek is a rocky area with numerous small drops and cascades. The hiking trails offer a combination of paved and unpaved surfaces.

Fires Creek Falls

One of the features on this trail are the falls. Sometimes referred to as Fires Creek Falls, the proper name is Leatherwood Falls. These falls are on a tributary of Fires Creek and are a short cascade that is tucked into a little cove area.

Perhaps the most common adjectives used to describe this area are scenic, peaceful, and tranquil. The falls are almost directly across from the picnic area which makes this is a great area to hike to and then have a picnic before hiking out.
